From the January 2022 issue of Car and car companies are content with an ounce here and a gram there when they pull weight out of their cars. So when BMW announced that the new M5 CS would be 230 pounds lighter than the 4243-pound M5 Competition, we were skeptical. As bariatric physicians and our tech department are fond of saying, the scales don't lie. At the weigh-in, the CS registered 4096 pounds, or 147 pounds less than the Competition. Not quite the result promised, but still a big move in the right drop those pounds, a carbon-fiber hood joins the standard M5's carbon-fiber roof, but the main weight loss comes from removing sound-deadening material and swapping the luxury-grade thrones for the lightweight racing-style front seats from the M3. BMW didn't pull out all the stuffing, though, as the CS remains placid, measuring a low 66 decibels at 70 mph, matching a 2018 M5 we tested on the same surface. To make the most of the lighter M5, BMW wrung 10 extra horsepower out of the Competition's twin-turbo V-8. With 627 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque churning through a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the M5 CS posts a time to 60 mph and a quarter-mile speed of 130 mph in seconds. The trans pops off shifts and shows its commitment in its most race-car-like mode as it slots itself into the right gear under braking to give you what you need for the P Zero Corsa PZC4s are a no-cost option. Likely thanks to the Corsas, steering feedback is clearer and there's simply more of it. While the weight loss is excellent, it doesn't result in a completely different driving experience. We'd guess that fitting these aggressive tires to an M5 Competition and removing marzipan from your diet would likely have a similar effect. But you would miss out on the CS's revised dampers. Unlike in every M car we can recall, selecting the most aggressive damper setting, Sport Plus, doesn't turn the suspension to granite, and the ride quality remains appropriate for a sports sedan. Combine the extra grip, the secure body control, and the enlivened steering, and you get a canyon-ripping sports sedan that will shrink most sports cars in its rearview you're wondering what CS stands for. Maybe it's Challenge Special or Calorie Suppression. What we know is that when BMW pulls weight out of a car and adds those letters, it will include a Customer Surcharge. At least your $143,995 covers all the Competition hardware and the M Driver's package that bumps up the top speed and comes with some driving lessons. That price is barely more than what you'll pay for a comparably equipped Competition, and the CS's tires and tuning make for a quicker, livelier, and more dialed-in M5. C’était sans compter sur le savoir-faire des ingénieurs de la marque bavaroise, qui ont mis au point la tonitruante M5 CS. BMW M5 Competition En prenant l’appellation CS, la M5 devient le modèle M le plus puissant jamais produit. Sous son capot, le moteur V8 de 4,4 l revendique 635 ch, soit 10 de plus que M5 Competition. Le couple est pour sa part identique avec 750 Nm disponible entre 1 800 et 5950 tr/mn. Une mécanique endiablée, dont la fiche technique est tout simplement ahurissante 635 ch à 6 000 tr/mn, technologie Twin Power turbo, injection directe haute pression HPI et commande entièrement variable de la levée des soupapes Valvetronic. Pour transmettre cette puissance, la M5 CS reprend la boîte de vitesses huit rapports M avec Drivelogic ainsi que le système de transmission intégrale M xDrive. The new BMW M5 CS has been revealed ahead of its launch in the spring – with a headline power output of 635hp making it the most powerful M-car ever built. It’s also likely to be one of the most expensive, with a confirmed UK list price of over £140,000… It’s actually the first time BMW has launched a CS version of the M5, and the firm hasn’t held back in making it a landmark. The M5 CS builds on the already-potent M5 Competition with bespoke ‘Goldbronze’ 20-inch alloys and body accents in the same colour. The bonnet is made from lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic CFRP, as are the front splitter, rear spoiler and rear diffuser. Lightweight materials also help the M5 CS weigh in 70kg lighter than the M5 Competition. Standard BMW Laserlight headlights accent the daytime running lights in yellow when low or high beam is activated – or when the driver unlocks the car. As well as the gorgeous Frozen Deep Green metallic featured here, the M5 CS is also available in Brands Hatch Grey metallic, and Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic ‘frozen’ is BMW-speak for matt-finish. Four bucket seats Inside, BMW has fitted a bespoke Alcantara steering wheel, carbon fibre gearshift paddles and a lightweight fixed cover for the centre console – which the firm says gives a “significant weight reductionâ€. The front seats are M Carbon chairs and there are, uniquely, two individual bucket-style seats in the rear as well. All are trimmed in Merino leather with Mugello Red contrast detailing. The head restraints on all four seats have an outline of the Nurburgring racetrack. The 635hp twin-turbo V8 is 10hp more powerful than the M5 Competition – and 0-62mph in just seconds makes it seconds faster than the car it’s based on. Top speed is electronically capped… to 189mph. Sensibly, M Carbon ceramic brakes are standard – pick from red calipers as standard or gold as an option – and the M5 CS is also 7mm lower than the M5 Competition, and fitted with dampers from the M8 Gran Coupe. Various other parts of the suspension have been retuned and grippy Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres are standard. BMW has confirmed the starting price of the new M5 CS will be £140,780, with deliveries beginning in the spring.
